HYGRID AFRICA — SOLAR EV BATTERY SWAPPING CORRIDOR

POWERING AFRICA'S NEXT GENERATION OF FREIGHT

Building solar-powered EV infrastructure for a cleaner, more efficient and energy-secure future across Africa.

Mombasa → Lubumbashi  |  2,600 km  |  15 Planned Hubs  |  4 Countries

CAN AFRICA'S BUSIEST FREIGHT CORRIDOR RUN ON SUN, NOT DIESEL?

The HyGrid Africa project is designed to transform a major East and Central African freight corridor through solar-powered EV charging, battery swapping and energy storage infrastructure.

The vision is to reduce diesel dependency while providing reliable energy for electric heavy transport across long-distance routes.

ELECTRIC FREIGHT

Each planned hub combines renewable energy generation, battery storage, EV charging and automated battery swapping — turning sunlight into reliable electric freight.

THREE CORE TECHNOLOGIES

01 — AUTOMATED BATTERY SWAPPING

For heavy trucks and buses.

3–5 min  target swap time

180–300 kWh  energy delivered per swap

Battery swapping is designed to minimise vehicle downtime for long-distance freight operations.

02 — EV FAST CHARGING

Charging infrastructure planned for:

Passenger EVs
Vans
Buses
Light commercial vehicles

Part of an integrated charging ecosystem along the corridor.

03 — SOLAR + ENERGY STORAGE

Each planned hub targets:

4–6 MWp  Solar PV

6–10 MWh  Energy storage

Solar-plus-storage is designed to support reliable operation in areas with weak or limited grid infrastructure.

WHY IT MATTERS

LOWER TRANSPORT COSTS

Project modelling indicates potential operating cost savings compared with diesel freight.

CLEANER FREIGHT

Reduce dependence on diesel and support measurable emissions reductions.

ENERGY SECURITY

Solar generation and battery storage provide an alternative energy source in weak-grid areas.

REGIONAL ECONOMIC GROWTH

Support lower logistics costs, new infrastructure investment and local economic opportunities.

15–30%

Indicative potential cost advantage per kilometre versus diesel transport.
